Sermon: The Scourging: Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus
Apr 5, 2026 • Pastor Michael Gist
What is Scourging? Scourging refers to the act of severely whipping, flogging, or punishing someone, often using a multi-thonged whip (a scourge) to cause intense pain or corporal punishment.
Following his condemnation, Jesus was brutally scourged by Roman soldiers with a flagrum, tearing his flesh. He was mocked, crowned with thorns, and forced to carry his cross to Golgotha, where he was nailed to it. Jesus died after six hours of crucifixion, was buried, and resurrected three days later.
